Universal Audio Enigmatic '82 Overdrive Special Amp – a digital guitar amplifier emulator in pedal format, from the guitars and amplifiers category. Built on exclusive access to original Overdrive Special amplifiers across three decades – from 1970s Santa Cruz models through 1980s and '90s LA-built iterations – with full end-to-end signal path modelling, nine speaker/microphone combinations, and a Custom mode for configuring the ODS circuit from the ground up.
Why the ODS is different and what that means in practice
Howard Dumble's Overdrive Special was built individually for each client – epoxy-covered circuits, custom preamp modifications, a separate HRM (Hot Rubber Monkey) overdrive path, and a proprietary tone stack. No two sounded alike. The Enigmatic '82 doesn't attempt to copy a single specific ODS. Instead, it models the dynamic range and saturation character that connects these amplifiers: enormous clean headroom with a soft, progressive transition into overdrive that responds directly to pick attack and pickup position. In Jazz mode, the sound is crystalline clean with rich harmonics. Rock mode introduces the characteristic creamy breakup that preserves chord clarity even when pushed hard. Custom mode exposes the FET preamp voicing, tone stack selection (Classic '70s or late-'80s Skyline), HRM overdrive circuit engagement, output tube bias, and power supply stiffness – a level of circuit-level detail unavailable in any other pedal at this price point.
Cabinets, microphones, and four footswitch modes
UA applied its own Dynamic Speaker Modeling technology – the same engine that powers the OX Amp Top Box – to capture nine speaker/microphone pairings: three primary cab selections onboard (GB25, D65, EV12) plus six additional cabinets available through the UAFX Control app. These include Greenback 25 W, V30, JBL D-120F, and EV12 speakers miked with ribbon, dynamic, and condenser microphones in various configurations. The pedal handles stereo input and output via two 6.35 mm jacks per side. Four presets are stored on the pedal and switchable in hardware. MIDI over USB enables full control from a setlist or pedalboard controller. Four-cable mode integrates with a real amplifier's effects loop. Power requirement: 9 V DC, isolated, 400 mA.
