The 013 Ambisonic is a first-order ambisonic microphone - four phase-matched 25mm condenser capsules, each with its own Soyuz toroidal transformer, built into a single body styled after the 023 Bomblet housing. Instead of a multi-mic array for spatial recording, an engineer gets one device that captures the full sphere of sound in A-Format across four independent outputs on a breakout cable.
One device instead of a microphone array
Capturing a spatial sound field with conventional methods usually means several matched microphones, precise array geometry, and a separate signal path for each - a lot of gear, calibration, and floor space on a set or in a concert hall. The 013 Ambisonic replaces that with one factory-calibrated tetrahedral capsule array that just needs four identical preamps set to the same gain. Signal from the color-coded XLR connectors - red, yellow, green, and blue - arrives at the interface as ready-to-use A-Format material, without manually positioning separate microphones.
Changing perspective in the mix, not on set
A common problem with spatial recording is having to commit to a stereo direction and width during the session itself - the wrong call at capture time usually means going back to reshoot. The included Soyuz plugin bundle, developed with Audio Brewers, transcodes A-Format signal to B-Format with zero latency, and the decoder lets you rotate the sound field and shift its dominance during post-production. The same recording can be folded down to stereo, binaural headphones, surround, or Atmos without a second pass at capture.
