Six "machines" — Kick, Snare, Metal, Perc, Tone, and Chord — are ready-made FM algorithms tuned to a specific sound type, each shaped by four universal macro controls: Colour, Shape, Sweep, and Contour. Any of the six tracks can run any machine independently of the others, letting you build either a classic drum kit or a melodic section made entirely of Tone and Chord generators — without the constraints of a fixed factory track assignment.
FM synthesis without programming operators
Classic FM synthesis puts off many musicians with its dense modulation routing and multi-stage envelopes. Model:Cycles hides that complexity behind six predefined machines and four macros per machine, giving access to characteristic FM sound — from metallic percussion to synthetic chord stabs — without needing to understand the underlying operator algorithms.
The Elektron sequencer as a composition tool, not just a recorder
A 64-step sequencer with independent length and scale per track, parameter locks, and micro-timing lets you build polyrhythmic, evolving patterns directly on the unit. Trig conditions and assignable retrig introduce an element of non-determinism into a sequence — useful when playing live, where a pattern needs to evolve rather than loop identically.
