Arturia MicroFreak Vocoder Edition – a paraphonic hybrid synthesizer combining 21 digital oscillator modes, an analog State Variable filter, and a built-in 16-band vocoder. The Vocoder Edition is the full MicroFreak in a white enclosure with a Swan graphic, extended with a detachable electret gooseneck microphone and a dedicated Vocoder mode accessible directly from the Type knob.
A vocoder that goes well beyond robot vocals
The 16-band vocoder engine analyses the microphone signal – or any external audio source connected via the 3.5 mm TRRS input – and resynthesizes it through the MicroFreak's oscillator. Three carrier waveforms are available: sawtooth, variable pulse width, and noise. The Timbre knob shifts the analysis band range while Shape adjusts filter bandwidth across all 16 bands – together they give precise control over vocal character, from intelligible speech to blurred, granular textures. Critically, the vocoder supports up to four simultaneous voices in paraphonic mode, enabling vocoded harmonies without an external harmonizer. The external input isn't limited to voice: drum machines, guitars, and synthesizers all undergo formant resynthesis, opening the engine up as a general-purpose spectral processing tool.
Modulation matrix and oscillator engines as a production instrument
Beyond the vocoder, MicroFreak offers 20 additional oscillator modes: wavetable, physical modelling via Karplus-Strong, granular (Texturer), Superwave, Mutable Instruments Plaits engines, and three Noise Engineering modes. The analog State Variable filter, based on the Oberheim SEM circuit, runs in LP, BP, and HP at 12 dB/oct with self-oscillation. A 5×7 modulation matrix (5 sources, 7 destinations including 3 user-assignable), cycling envelope, 6-shape LFO with sync, and a 64-step sequencer with Spice and Dice randomization create a patch environment that evolves and breathes without external modules. CV/Gate, MIDI DIN, and USB connectivity cover Eurorack and DAW integration simultaneously.
